St. Croix County Direct Farm Market Association June 8th, 2004 This meeting was called by a group of concerned St. Croix county direct farm marketers. A list of over 70 direct farm marketers was provided by Betty Van Someren and a letter announcing this meeting was sent to all. This same announcement was also sent to all Town Presidents and members of the County Board. At the meeting, those in attendance were asked to provide a brief statement as to what they thought the Association's mission might be or what it could do for them as direct farm marketers. Below is a list of some of the responses: Ø Provide direction of markets of locally produced agricultural products Ø Work as a group in promoting products, working with University extension and the agriculture department Ø Promote sales of local produce in an orderly and efficient manner Ø Promote sale of locally produced goods Ø Change county ordinances in favor of farm marketing Ø Strength in numbers Ø Sell local produce Ø Work together to market local produce in an organized manner Ø Share ideas/info on regulations in St. Croix Co. affecting farm marketing Ø Push more fresh veggies into the market Ø Old fashioned direct marketing-how much can we do? The development of Direct Farm Ordinances in St. Croix County and Marketing Issues appeared to be top of the list for the Association. The group in attendance did appear to come to a consensus that they wanted to an input in the zoning and ordinance making policies within the county concerning direct farm markets. It was suggested by Dr. Dave Tretcher that in order to do so the group needed to identify and focus on a few key points to strategically make such a move. The following items were recognized as key factors in order to effectively make zoning changes: Ø 1) Organize Ø 2) Meet county board members including identifying the members that are now appointed to the planning and zoning commission Ø 3) Identify other direct marketing groups in St. Croix County who may be effected by such zoning changes Ø 4) Proposal development Ø 5) identify any model ordinances within any other counties in WI Ø 6) Economic benefits Ø 7) Getting into the information loop re: zoning discussions Ø 8) The need to share information with other direct marketers From this list the following four areas were identified and the stated individuals volunteered to collect information or do some investigative work. Ø Organization: § Identify the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors-Wilson § Identify the zoning and planning commission members-Wilson § Identify other direct marketing groups in the county-Wilson § Identify the current and status of the proposed regulations-Betty Ø Develop alternatives: § Study other counties-Nancy § Draft an alternative Ø Economic Impact of the Direct farm market group in St. Croix County: § How big is it? Contact Division of Tourism and DATCP-Loren Ø Promote Internal Communications within the group: o Get into the loop with County board members-future o Communicate with direct farm marketers-Wilson will provide a web page at wkmills@redwing.net The next meeting will be at the Ag Service Center in Baldwin on Tuesday July 13th at 7pm. Dr. Tretcher will hopefully assist the group on the 13th as they formulate a direction for the association with short and long term goals. Betty Van Someren offered to pick up the key before the next meeting and Jon Behling offered to place a press release announcing the next meeting in local papers.
